Writing a Great Internship or Job Resume
Writing a Great Internship or Job ResumeWriting a Great Internship or Job ResumeMany college students procastinate when writing a resume simply because they are elend sure exactly where to start. Freshmen and sophomore students may worry that they have limited information to include on a resume while seniors may worry that employers will not be sufficiently impressed by their academics and internships. Start the Resume Strong Since most employers will skim a resume in less than 10 seconds, applicants must immediately catch the attention of the reviewer to be shortlisted and selected for an interview. A combination of impressive content, attractive formatting, a strong mission statement, and clear bullet points that highlight what the employer is looking for are hallmarks of a strong resume. Most importantly, one resume does not fit all, and your resume should be tailored for each application. At the top of your resume, include all of your personal information and provide a strong mission statement that highlights your professional goals. You can highlight pertinent information in a larger font to make it stand out. Tailor Your Resume Resumes tailored to the needs of the employer and that directly address the internship or job requirements are most likely to receive further consideration. Show your knowledge of the relevant industry, and showcase your skills and accomplishments that are a good match for the employer. Craft a Relevant Experience section on your resume that is just that, relevant to the job or internship to which you are applying, and include everything you have done in that area - coursework, jobs, internships, volunteer experiences, community service projects. Use Concise Language Be specific in describing your experiences. Avoid clichs such as responsibilities or duties included on the resume, and get to the point by concisely describing your experience. Begin each phrase with an action verb (assisted, performed, created), avoid the use of personal pronouns (I, me, you, they, their) and articles (a, an, the), and use a consistent tense. Proofread Your Resume Any spelling or grammatical errors are likely to eliminate your application from further consideration. A resume is one of the most important documents you will write and, as such, it requires a high level of attention to detail. How you approach your resume is an indicator of how you will approach your role as an intern or employee. Ask others, including professionals and career counselors, to review your resume before sending it out. Be Honest Most employers perform background and reference checks. If you fabricate or embellish information, an employer will find out, and you will not be considered. Focus on your strengths and find creative ways to tackle any shortcomings. Think about what makes you unique and why that could be of benefit to an employer - that one attribute might be what attracts a recruiters attention. Quantify Your Successes and Achievements Your value to an employer is validated by indicators of success. For example, writing increased sales on the previous year by 30 percent gives employers a tangible example of your capabilities. If you can, quantify your achievements using dollar amounts, percentages, and achievements against set targets. Place Your Degree at The Top of Your Resume As a student or new graduate, include your education immediately following the heading on your resume because this has been your focus most recently. After a few years in the workforce, list your degrees or education section to the bottom of your resume. Include the name and location of the college or university you attended along with your degree, major/minor, grade point average (if it is high), honors and awards, and anything else that would show your dedication and achievement during your studies. Include References and a Professional Portfolio Often references are not submitted until the employer asks for the m. More recently, many employers who prefer to have references and portfolios(if applicable) submitted along with the resume. When asking for a reference, be sure to ask the person if they feel they know you well enough to supply an excellent reference. You can create a second page to include with your resume that lists your references name, title, organization, phone, and email address. Be sure to ask permission before submitting the names of any references. Use an Attractive Format Dont pack too much information into your resume because your strengths will be lost in the text. Use the cover letter to add further information. If your resume looks too sparse, try adding coursework, volunteer work, co-curricular, or any specialized skills such as computer savviness or a foreign language. As a college student, keep your resume to one page.

3 Questions to Ask to Move on From a Bad Day - The Muse
3 Questions to Ask to Move on From a Bad Day - The Muse3 Questions to Ask to Move on From a Bad DayTheres no other way to say it Youve had an absolutely horrible day. You spilled coffee all over yourself during your commute and then showed up late to your meeting with a giant stain on your shirt. Your boss gave you a ton of not-so-great feedback on a recent project you spent weeks on. And, to top it all off, your desk mate decided that everybody should be able to hear her favorite playlist over and over again on full volume. Youre ready to head home, wallow in your own self-pity, and then leave this day behind you.I cant blame you. But, heres the thing Pressing pause for at least a little bit of reflection can help you not only move on- but also prevent you from having more schwimmbad days just like this one. 1. Will This Day Have a Lasting Impact? When your day was nothing but awful, its easy to send yourself into a downward spiral of despair. You make mountains out of molehills and become convinced that this one brief rough patch will be the demise of your entire career and reputation.Rest assured, thats hardly ever the case- and this question will help you step back and get some much-needed perspective. Of course, there will be some days that had so much go wrong they will require some further action to patch things up. But, most of the time? Youll be able to start fresh tomorrow morning without any sort of ill effects from the previous day.So, chin up More likely than not, everything that happened today probably wont matter too much next year (or even the next day).2. What Would You Do Differently? Are you the eternal winner of the blame game? I can relate. When things dont work out as planned, its easy to place all of the responsibility on your shoulders- regardless of whether you had any control over those circumstances or not. This is why it can be so helpful to identify what- if anything- youd do differently if you magically had a do-over of your day.Not o nly will you be able to show yourself some grace and quit blaming yourself for things you had nothing to do with (really, what power did you have over your train being late?), but youll also learn from any mistakes you actually did make- and then avoid doing them in the future. 3. What Went Well Today?Alright, youre so wrapped up in everything that went wrong that youre convinced today was so terrible its worthy of being the plot of a horror film. However, even the worst days have at least a few bright spots.Obsessing over the bad things is probably only going to send your mood into more of a nosedive. So, ask yourself this question to pull out a few of the positives.Even if its something as small as the fact that you got your favorite bagel sandwich for lunch or your colleague complimented your haircut, think of the things that actually went right today (trust me, there are a few of them). Its a great way to put those negative things behind you and boost your mood. Unfortunately, ba d days are inescapable every now and then. They can be frustrating and emotionally trying, but they can also be enlightening. Before you park yourself on your couch and drown your sorrows for the evening, take the time to think through these three key questions- and youll be back up and at em in no time.

Military Service Credit for Federal Civilian Retirement
Military Service Credit for Federal Civilian RetirementMilitary Service Credit for Federal Civilian RetirementIf you have performed honorable active military tafelgeschirr after December 31, 1956, and have now accepted a position within the federal government, your active duty time will count toward your federal retirement pension. As an example, if you attended a United States Service Academy for four years, graduated, and then served five years in the military honorably, those nine years will count toward your federal retirement, even though the four years at the tafelgeschirr academy do bedrngnis count toward time served if accepting a twenty year retirement for military service. For the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) purposes, leistungspunkting of deutsche post ag 1956 military service depends on the following Making Deposits Is Required Federal Employment Before 1 Oct 82. Generally, if you were first employed in a position covered by CSRS before October 1, 1982, you may receive credit for your post 1956 military service if you retire from civilian service prior to age 62. However, if you do not make a military service deposit prior to separation from Federal employment, the military service will be eliminated from the computation of your CSRS annuity when you reach age 62, if you are entitled to Social Security benefits. Federal Employment After 1 Oct 82. Generally, if you were first employed in a position covered by CSRS on or after October 1, 1982, you will not receive credit for post 1956 military service for any retirement purpose unless you make a military service deposit prior to separation from Federal employment. The amount of the deposit is a sum equal to 7-percent (special category employees may pay a higher amount) of the military basic pay earned during the period of military service, plus interest. Current Programming For the Federal Employee Retirement System (FERS) purposes, crediting of post 1956 military service depends on the following Generally, if you were automatically covered under the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) on January 1, 1987 or at any time thereafter, you must make the military service deposit prior to separation from Federal employment to receive credit for any retirement purpose. Military service is credited under FERS rules if it was performed after you became covered by FERS or you had less than 5 years of civilian service (other than CSRS Interim or Offset service) upon becoming covered by FERS. The amount of the deposit is a sum equal to 3-percent (special category employees may pay a higher amount) of the military basic pay earned during the period of military service, plus interest. If you receive military retired or retainer pay, you will not receive credit for any military service unless certain conditions are met or apply. Making Deposits - Why You Should Making a deposit for post 1956 military service allows you to receive permanent credit for military servi ce under your Federal civilian retirement system, and the military service remains creditable for Social Security purposes. Making a deposit early helps to avoid the accrual of additional interest. The rate of interest charged on post 1956 deposits changes annually. This interest accrues and compounds annually on your Interest Accrual Date (IAD). Your first IAD is the date 1-year after the date the interest-free grace periods ends. You will be given the option to make the deposit in one lump sum or through payroll deduction. All post-56 military service deposits must be made to the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) before separation from Federal employment. Even if you dont plan to retire or leave Federal service soon, it is a very good idea to at least obtain the amount of your military earnings so that the deposit can be computed more easily. To process the deposit, we can use your actual military pay vouchers for complete periods of military service in computing the m ilitary deposit or you can obtain a certified estimate of your military earnings from the appropriate branch of service. The DLA Human Resources Center, Customer Support Offices (CSO) can provide instructions for obtaining the certified estimate. Once you do complete the deposit, the DFAS payroll office will send you a receipt that indicates that your deposit was paid in full, the amount paid and the period of service the deposit covers. Once you receive the receipt you will need to forward a copy to the CSO office that services you and it will be filed in your Official Personnel Folder as a permanent record. The office needs this information from you in order to determine whether you can receive credit in your CSRS or FERS retirement benefit. When an individual leaves Federal service or moves to another payroll office, their payroll records are closed out and sent onto the Office of Personnel Management (OPM). OPM will maintain these records until the individual applies for retir ement, requests a refund or dies. Procedures For Making Deposits If you are within six months of retirement, you should submit your request to make the deposit when submitting your application for retirement. You should apply to make a payment by completing aStandard Form 3108)- Application to Make Service Credit/FERS.You will be notified of any amounts due so you can decide whether or not to make the payment. You will not be authorized regular retirement annuity payments until the process and deposit payment are complete.

How to Choose Presumed Incompetent
How to Choose Presumed Incompetent I would like to discuss a single element of the academic world that produces women particularly vulnerable to discrimination. If women are not as likely to publish in leading journals, we wish to know if its because of pure sexism or some other explainable factors. Motherhood now includes a shock to a lot of successful ladies. Things You Wont Like About Presumed Incompetent and Things You Will Oh, except theres blame Its affecting enough kids, we really need to have a look. Some folks recognize this. To begin with, the majority of people are incompetent. Getting the Best Presumed Incompetent In the 1890s, Illinois became among the very first places on earth to set a juvenile court, thereby taking minors from the adult system, Clark stated. Interest in the results of the litigation doesnt render an individual incompetent to testify. Judging competency The Supreme Court of the USA established competency so as to be certain that a defenda nt can rationally take part in and understand the court procedure. A defendant also may request a closed trial, although they must demonstrate an open trial would hinder their rights to a ritterlich hearing and there are no acceptable alternatives that could guarantee a good trial. Another court proceeding regarding guardianship has to be held. Such a competency ruling cannot be utilized as evidence against the defendant should they later pleads insanity for a defense in the criminal trial. The papers still havent been published. If You Read Nothing Else Today, Read This Report on Presumed Incompetent Maybe my very first point isnt right, and the ordinary lawyer (or person) is actually impressively great. When its employed to describe an expert duty or obligation, it usually means that the individual has demonstrated a lack of ability to carry out professional functions. The kid is simply allowing somebody else to act for him. An individual will be competent to testify even if the individual has only heard part of a conversation. Presumed Incompetent - Overview When its used to refer to the legal qualification of someone, it means the person doesnt have the legal capacity to put in a contract. If theres been no adjudication of mental incompetency, a contract created by a mentally incapacitated person is Voidable by them. If convicted, the youngster could be put on probation for a minimum of five decades but not beyond the time of 21, Minger explained. 1 person reads only whats on the card. I guarantee this is going to be a lively discussion. Grief includes rough patches and itll make your already tricky PhD program even more troublesome to put up with. The legal suggestions and guidance of a lawyer could help to prevent losing the right to sue. This type of conditional untersttzungsangebot isnt in my option support in any way, its control. The Importance of Presumed Incompetent The juvenile competency legislation was on the border of being pa ssed two years back, but didnt make it at the conclusion of the session. Too frequently, the rights of nonspeaking autistic people today are completely ignored. Its completely free and open to the general public. The most important point of this Article is to encourage other people to raise these issues for the correct and important explanations. The New Fuss About Presumed Incompetent If a party doesnt comprehend the character and results of the contract when its formed, they are regarded as having mental incapacity. If two people have precisely the same sentence, no issue. The individual also needs to be able to perceive and narrate. A specialist person who fails to fulfill the duties required of that profession could possibly be judged incompetent. It recommends that children under 14 ought never to be prosecuted, whatever the crime. For crime victims that are age 21 or older, their spouse, along with their children under 21 decades old, could be considered indirect vict ims. When someone is judged to be incompetent, a guardian is appointed to manage the individuals property and individual affairs. The parent may also have to be bonded in the event the child has assets.

Develop Better Strategies With a Business Assessment
Develop Better Strategies With a Business Assessment Develop Better Strategies With a Business Assessment How do you assess your business and what do you do with that information? Do you update your business plan only when there is a crisis? How do you develop and implement business strategies? If you have advice to share to help other business women struggling to keep their own businesses going please share your tips, advice, anecdotes, and resources. How to Assess Your Business The most important rule when assessing your business is to completely separate the business from yourself. A business assessment should look at the strengths and weaknesses of your business - not your own or that of your partners and employees (those assessments should be done independently of a business assessment). A more personal assessment on how your business decisions will affect you and your family (i.e., whether or not to stay in business or to make personal financial sacrifices to keep your business afloat during hard times) is an assessment that should only be made after you have determined the viability of your business. To begin your business assessment, make a list that includes three columns: The Positives: List successes and things that are working well. This column is your balance column. An assessment or list that only contains the negatives is not focusing on the big picture.Reality Check: List business goals that have not been met, specific challenges, and setbacks. This is your reality check column and should not contain personal statements that begin with I. You are not looking to reinvent yourself, but ways to improve your business. The Assessment: In this column, you will try to identify key reasons for challenges and divide each issue from Column 2 into two main areas: Things you can change; and things you cannot change. For example, if you are trying to sell something consumers simply are not buying, you may not be able to change consumer trends, but you can change your product line. The chart list below is an example of how one business owner assessed the overall state of her business that is taking a loss (your own assessment should be more detailed). Notice the complete absence of pronouns that make this assessment a personal indictment, but uses words that identify the business challenges, not personal challenges. Identifying challenges without personal blame allows you to see solutions and assess your business idea based on its own merits. For example, in the chart below we see that a lease that was once affordable is now a cash drain. The problem is not necessarily that the business idea and model are bad, but shows that one decision (the lease) has put a strain on the budget. Business Assessment Checklist Positives: Balance List My Business Reality Check List The Assessment The business did well for the first three years, growing from a one-person operation to a company employing 15 workers. The past year the business has taken a loss; sales have declined and expenses exceeded revenues. Things that led to business losses: product sales are down, direct and indirect expenses of hiring new employees, moving into bigger office space the rent is too high now. The economy is horrible!Cannot Change: The economy or consumer spending habits. Can Change: Number of expenses. Look at downsizing as a strategy for long-term viability; try to renegotiate the lease or sublease until more suitable space can be found; examine product lines and closely study what products are selling better and why. Tips A business assessment is balanced and offers both positives and negatives. It should be designed to identify problems clearly to address things that you can change, and evaluate the impact of things you cannot.

This is the age youll have the most self-esteem
This is the age you'll have the most self-esteem This is the age you'll have the most self-esteem When are you going to finally feel worthy? This is a lifelong question many of us wrestle with our entire careers, and now science has an answer about when itâs most likely to happen: age 60. In a new analysis on 191 research articles about self-esteem, covering data from almost 165,000 people, researchers in Psychological Bulletin concluded that your later midlife is when youâll have the highest self-esteem.Youâll have more self-esteem when youâre olderFor those of us struggling to define our self-worth in our early careers, there is some good news to look forward to later. The researchers found that our self-esteem has a natural lifespan, peaking at age 60 and remaining constant until age 70, regardless of the gender, ethnicity, or nationality of the participants.âSelf-esteem increases in early and middle childhood, remains constant in adolescence, increases strongly in young adulthood, continues to increase in middle adulthood, peaks between age 60 and 70 years, and dec lines in old age and more strongly in very old age,â the researchers concluded. The study suggests our self-esteem climbs as we age because maturity is associated with higher self-esteem. When youâre less worried about social comparisons in high school and college, you can finally feel be free to be who you are and recognize that you are enough. As we get more responsibilities and learn from our mistakes, we feel more assured of our place in the world.âDuring middle adulthood, most people further invest in their social roles, for example by taking on managerial roles at work, maintaining a satisfying relationship with their spouse or partner, and by helping their children to become responsible and independent adults,â the study said.

5 Key Steps to Enrich Your Job
5 Key Steps to Enrich Your Job 5 Key Steps to Enrich Your Job Job Enrichment occurs when a job is redesigned in order to make it more challenging and/or less repetitive. Instead of moving an employee to a different job, the job itself changes. A recent survey found that 53 percent of employees say the number one reason they love their company is interesting and challenging work. If you want your employees to love you, making their work more interesting can be the first step along that path. If you want to love your job, you can make changes yourself (with management support). Making Your Job More Enriching Of course, not all work is interesting. We call it âworkâ because its not playing. The idea that a boss needs to turn work into a circus is laughable. But, you can still make a job more enriching without dropping the important tasks. Here are 5 ways to make your own job more enriching, which will motivate you to perform better. If you wait for your boss to enrich your job, you may be waiting for a long time. Identify key tasks. If your hours were suddenly cut from 40 to 20, what are the things you would do first? If you are told at 8:00 am that the regional vice president is showing up at noon to check on how things are going, what tasks do you start working on?Thought exercises like this can help you to identify the tasks that are truly important. Sometimes the things that take up much of our time arent the things that are the most important.Consult with your boss as well. Ask what she sees are the key tasks. Pay special attention to the answers, because its critical that you dont accidentally eliminate something that your boss sees as important. Get rid of useless tasks. How often do you go to work and do something that seems like a tremendous waste of time? Do you ever make reports that no one ever uses? File paper copies in a filing cabinet, when the same information is available electronically? These tasks arent key to the job, but they take up a lot of time. Take a few minutes to sit down and identify what is not adding value.Once youve identified tasks that dont add value, you will need to speak with the other stakeholders. You may be 99 percent sure that no one looks at the report you create, but if you just stop sending it, someone will be angry.Figure out what will happen if you stop doing the tasks youve identified as unimportant. Consider the consequences before suggesting a change. Make sure you check with your boss before quitting each task. Think about automating. Maybe that report you do is really critical and lots of people rely on it, but its boring as all get out to make. If thats the case, ask yourself, âCan I automate this?â Reports put together in Excel can often be automated in Microsoft Access.Additionally, if you reorder your tasks, you may find that things function more quickly and easily with a few tweaks. For example, if you have to spend a lot of time handling paper, you can institute a one-touch rule. That is, each piece of paper only gets handled one time. You receive it, do what needs to be done, and file it away in one fell swoop. It practically eliminates the dreaded filing days. Figure out what will bring value to the business. While you want to enrich your job in order to make your life better, your boss will be much happier if you put the business first. Identify areas within your department or company that could use a bit more support or additional knowledge. If youve freed up some time by automating and eliminating tasks, you can propose to do something different.Dont just jump in and start doing the new tasks (unless your boss is totally hands off), but bring them up to your manager. Point out that youve managed to free up some time and since the company could really use an additional person trained to do X or Y, youd like to start working on that. Smart bosses will jump on the opportunity for you to do something that helps the company grow. Add enrichment yourself. Sometimes your boss wont be amenable to making changes to your job. If thats the case, figure out where you want to be in a year, or two years, and start working towards that. Some of your preparation can be official, work-related activities. Asking to attend a specific meeting, for example, may not be considered âout of boundsâ but will open you up to new opportunities and ideas. If that doesnt work, try taking a class or learning a new task on your own. It may seem silly to enrich your job by doing something outside of work, but as you gain new skills and knowledge, your boss may be willing to let you make internal changes. You can enrich just about any job. If you desire to learn and work hard, your boss will see your hard work and hopefully reward you with more interesting and engaging tasks. - Suzanne Lucas is a freelance writer who spent 10 years in corporate human resources, where she hired, fired, managed the numbers, and double-checked with the lawyers.

Entrepreneur Peter Shankman on Why ADHD Is Great for Business
Entrepreneur Peter Shankman on Why ADHD Is Great for Business Entrepreneur Peter Shankman on Why ADHD Is Great for Business Entrepreneur Peter Shankman on Why ADHD Is Great for Business Fisher Can a disability be an advantage in the workplace? Yes, says Peter Shankman, author of Faster Than Normal. In many ways, Shankman is typical of people with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). From childhood on, he struggled to tune out distractions long enough to finish an assignment, follow instructions, or organize a project. At the same time, though, Shankman bubbled over with ideas. A serial entrepreneur who has started and sold three thriving companies, he now runs two enterprises while traveling constantly, giving hundreds of speeches a year. He hosts a popular podcast called Faster Than Normal; hes authored three previous books, two of which were bestsellers. His prodigious output isnt despite ADHD, he believes, but because of it. Simply put, the ADHD brain is an untapped, nearly limitless source of creative ideas, energy, and passion, he writes, much, much more so than a regular brain. The caveat, Shankman adds, is that we need to learn how to tap into it[and] how to channel, harness, and properly utilize that power. Faster Than Normal is a detailed, down-to-earth guidebook on how to turn ADHD from a potential liability into an asset. Its a skill that more employees, and their managers, may find they need. Roughly 5% of the total U.S. workforce has been diagnosed with ADHD. Thats about 800,000 employees, and it seems the number is growing. A detailed new study on disabilities in the workplace from the Center for Talent Innovation, a nonprofit research group, notes thatdue in part to recent advances in the study of brain chemistry44% of Millennials in white-collar jobs have been diagnosed with a mental health condition, including ADHD, versus 25% of Baby Boomers and 37% of Gen X. recently spoke with Shankman about how to make the most of ADHD at work to maximize employee performance. Q. Most people tend to think of attention-deficit disorder as a problem, but you say its been behind most of my success. Why? A. The same brain chemistry that causes symptoms you dont want, like difficulty concentrating, also has some effects you do want. People with ADHD are usually innovators, because they see connections between seemingly unrelated things and ideas. Thinking differently, not following the crowd, can be a huge advantage in any business. The hyperactivity part of ADHD matters, too. Many regular people come up with an idea and then spend so much time thinking about it that they never actually do it. People with ADHD dont have that problem. We move fast. I came up with the idea for one of my online companies on a flight from Houston to L.A. I had a whole business plan by the time the plane landed, and the web site was up the next day. Q. How do you manage someone with ADHD differently? A. Theres been plenty of research showing that people with this disorder tend to change jobs more often, and have less success in their careers generally, than most employees. But it doesnt have to be that way. Managers can help people with ADHD do truly stellar work by making a few fairly simple changes, including: Work off their excess energy. Someone with ADHD absolutely needs a physical workout during the day. Its not optional. So dont hesitate to allow that person an hour to go to the gym, or just out for a long, brisk walkat midday. Provide a firm deadline. ADHD makes it hard to focus on a task without a deadline. So never say to someone with ADHD, Just get to this when you have time. That is the kiss of death. Give us firm deadlines. The point really is to allow each employee to find the zone where he or she is most productive. Because we have trouble tuning out distractions, that might mean letting an ADHD employee work flexible hours. Personally, I come into the office at 6 a.m., because I do my best work in the three hours before other people come in and start distracting me. Q. As a manager with ADHD, what has helped you most? A. One thing that helps me tremendously is making sure I hire people who are good at following up on details. ADHD often means you are great at seeing the big picture, but not so good at the practical nuts and bolts. So surrounding myself with detail-oriented people has taken a huge weight off my mind. Something else to be aware of is that, with ADHD, your mind works faster than other peoples. So, before a meeting, make a conscious effort to take several deep breaths, focus your attention, and get ready to speak calmly. Slow down your train of thought enough so that other people can follow you. Q. Youve interviewed lots of fellow entrepreneurs and other businesspeople with ADHD on your podcast, Faster Than Normal. What have these conversations revealed about ADHD? A. The main thing is that having a faster-than-normal brain does not mean you are broken. Kids grow up thinking that, if theyre not like everyone else, theres something wrong with them. But its no coincidence that many super-successful people, like Steve Jobs and Richard Branson, have either been diagnosed with ADHD or have shown distinct signs of it. Having a faster brain is like having a Lamborghini versus a Honda. The Lamborghini is betterif you know how to drive it.

7 Tips When Youre Going From Freelance to Full Time
7 Tips When Youre Going From Freelance to Full Time 7 Tips When Youre Going From Freelance to Full Time Whistle while you work- oh, those wonderful little dwarfs, so happy to be part of Snow Whiteâs crew. Thatâs what you envision, isnât it, now that youâve traded in your freelancer or consultant title for a full-time spot and health benefits at a corporate office? Working for a benevolent boss and being part of a team that truly is âone for all?â But what if youâre trying to whistle a happy tune, and it turns out youâre the âIâ working for the king, and thereâs no team in sight? Take it from me- it happens. And while there are plenty of perks that come with a proper 9-to-5, itâs also a big transition, with plenty of unexpected twists and turns along the way. If youâre moving from freelance to a full-time gig, here are seven steps to help you succeed, regardless of your new workplace reality. 1. Use Your Inside Voice Consultants come with a certain amount of credible cache (whether or not itâs deserved). As a consultant, your opinion- even if itâs the same thing that internal staffers have been saying forever- carries a lot of weight. When becoming a full-time employee, however, you may find that your one-time authoritative voice has lessened in its ability to be heard. For example, say youâre in a meeting and the topic is something you have successfully managed for several other companies in your pre-full-time employee life. Guess what? You no longer have the floor. Instead, youâre sitting with your colleagues while some other outside consultant is mapping out his plan for what you should do. While you might think it wise to raise your voice and demand action of the people who now are your co-workers, avoid that impulse. That approach wonât get you far now. Watch and learn how others around you bring their ideas to the table or suggest changes to the higher-ups, and try that, instead. 2. Embrace âOther Duties as Assignedâ Freelancers charge either by project or by the hour. And contracts are drawn up to outline details and specific deliverables. Full-timers can forget about all that and must get comfortable with ambiguity and switching gears. One day, you might be handed a corporate initiative thatâs hot and due yesterday. So you stay until the work is done, and youâre ready that very next morning to deliver. But when the morning comes, you learn that what was so hot just hours before no longer seems important to higher-ups. Instead, youâre being asked about your daily âbusiness as usualâ tasks- the ones you couldnât get to because you were working on that priority that now no longer is. Truthfully, itâs a bit of a juggling act, and sometimes, you and your consultant brain may not agree with what is or isnât a priority. Doesnât really matter. Learning to go with the flow, even if that flow seems like chaos, is the best way to navigate the waters. 3. Soar Like an Eagle, Despite a Team of Turkeys As a consultant, you pretty much consult. Youâre brought in to solve a problem. You offer up solutions. But more often than not, the execution of your solutions rests with the company and its internal teams. As a full-timer, youâre now part of the team responsible to get it done. And thatâs where success sometimes gets thwarted. Because, to put it nicely, even Snow Whiteâs Seven Dwarfs had to deal with teammates who were turkeys (Grumpy and Sleepy, to name two). The key is to keep focused on the goal, realize your colleaguesâ strengths and weaknesses, and work together to bring out each individualâs best. True, this may mean that youâre going to have to carry some of someone elseâs workload sometimes, but itâs all part of being a team player. And maybe one day, when you need that helping hand, someone on your team might end up carrying you. 4. Itâs a Job, Not a Prison Sentence Perhaps the one loss thatâs most difficult to deal with when transitioning from freelance to full-time is the fact that your time no longer is your own. You now âwork for the man,â and that can mean long hours, little recognition, and less-than-flexible scheduling. Because youâre not on the clock contractually, your employer will most likely push to get as much out of you as possible. You can choose to lament this loss of freedom- or to give thanks for the full-time gig. But more importantly, remember: Your employer isnât your warden, and itâs up to you to set reasonable and mutually beneficial boundaries. Give an honest dayâs work for an honest dayâs pay. Never forget your worth, and they wonât either. 5. Drink More Water Consultants watch the clock, as a matter of necessity due to accurate and ethical billing. Weâre expected to do the job, not buddy up with the staff. But guess what? As a full-timer, you are expected and encouraged to become a part of the corporate family. So, never miss a deliverableâs deadline, yes, but also never miss an opportunity to socialize with colleagues. In other words, itâs okay to spend time hanging around that water cooler. When inside corporate walls, you may be surprised how much more relationships matter when trying to get things done. The time you spend goofing around with others (for lack of a better term) may just end up expediting projects and exceeding expectations. 6. Be a King-Maker Your job as a consultant was to deliver solutions to any challenge a company presented you. Success meant that you were crowned and bowed down to. You were the king of your own company castle, and the spotlight was shined upon you. But now, your job is to support some other king in some other castle. âWhen I sit, you sit. When I kneel, you kneel. Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.â Yul Brenner wasnât the only chief executive to assume such power. Hopefully, the king you were hired to promote isnât the âall about meâ kind, but even if he (or she) is, your job now is to shine the light on him and whatever he deems important. If youâve chosen this company and this person to follow into full-time employment, chances are youâll be on the same page with your king and be only too happy to promote him. If, by some chance, thatâs not the case, think of this as an opportunity to exercise your creativity. Everyone has some king-worthy quality, so find it, and, perhaps, work your own magic to help your king see why this particular worthy quality matters and why he or she should exercise it as well. 7. Stay True to You Just because you shifted from being your own boss to having one doesnât mean you suddenly must become one of the Despicable Me minions. Remember that you were hired full-time because what you brought to the table as a consultant resonated with your new employer, and, going beyond that, you were thought to be a right-enough-fit to be brought in-house as part of the corporate family. So, donât discount who you are just because of who youâve now become. Youâre still the same you. Give your best to the people who sign your weekly paycheck, but stay true to you and give back to yourself. Use your entrepreneurial spirit on the weekends, at home, on your own hobbies and pet projects. Retaining a healthy balance is vital to sustaining your success and happiness, regardless of what you do for a living and for whom you do it. Photo of people working courtesy of Shutterstock.

Media Myths Affect How the Public Views News Coverage
Media Myths Affect How the Public Views News Coverage Media Myths Affect How the Public Views News Coverage People in news media often come under attack for shoddy reporting, political bias or for promoting stories that fail to live up to the hype. While mistakes sometimes happen, common media myths can usually be struck down once all the facts are considered. Reporters and Their Bosses Are Liberals Reporters are sometimes accused of having a liberal media bias. The fact is, reporters usually reflect the communities in which they work. They are taxpayers, parents, and homeowners like everyone else. Media executives are confronted with the same issues as those in other industries managing tight budgets, stockholders expectations and coping with economic forces beyond their control. News reporters do gravitate toward stories about change because change equals news. So when an elected leader of either political party proposes an overhaul of the system, that makes headlines. Someone else who supports the status quo will likely not get coverage. That is not a case of liberal bias. Conservatives who want to scrap the U.S. tax code would draw coverage, just as those who backed universal health care. All News Coverage Has an Unethical Political Bias Some of the cable news networks have become known for covering news with a political slant. Fox News Channel is widely seen as being conservative, while rival MSNBC is positioning itself on the other end of the spectrum. There is nothing unethical about covering news from a political viewpoint, as long as the viewers are aware of that fact. Journalism ethics are breached when an attempt is made to hide this motivation from the audience. While the recent focus has been on television news coverage, newspapers have taken editorial positions for generations. The political positions on the editorial page dont hinder accurate reporting of the bank robbery on the front page. Viewers should make a distinction between a news broadcast and news commentary. Commentators such as Bill OReilly or Rachel Maddow are usually free to talk about their opinions, but their shows arent considered straight news programming. Reporters Dont Tell the Whole Story Sometimes the whole story is impossible to get. There are still unanswered questions about the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which brought many changes to news coverage, but that shouldnt prevent a reporter from having a story printed or broadcast about what is known at the time. News users expect immediate information. In breaking news situations, some information turns out to be incorrect. That is an unfortunate byproduct of producing live coverage as events are unfolding. Viewers see raw information that comes from a variety of sources eyewitnesses can be wrong, investigations can be revised to include newly-found facts and emergency workers can sometimes not provide a clear picture of whats happening in a crisis. Reporters are often accused of only telling one side of a story. That happens when the people involved on the other side refuse to talk. A reporter must pursue getting the other side, but once the attempt is made, she can usually go ahead with the side that she has. Think back to the Watergate scandal. If the Nixon Administration could have killed the story by simply refusing to talk, the nation wouldve never known what was happening inside the White House. The Washington Post was correct in presenting a well-researched, one-sided story based on information from the source called Deep Throat that was proven to be the truth. Reporters Sensationalize the Facts A newspaper headline which reads Tempers Flare at City Council is going to attract more readers than one that says City Council Holds Its Regular Meeting. Its not sensationalism to accurately report the emotion involved in a story. Where reporters sometimes go overboard is making the emotional hook the centerpiece of the story. Facts are quickly replaced by the most flowery adjectives that can be found in a Thesaurus. Television is the usual culprit. Why its widely known that television reaches the head through the heart, reporters leap to include the crying family members of a murder victim in their story. While their pain may be uncomfortable to watch, the alternative is a cold, sterile story about crime statistics that dont show the heartbreak that violence has on families. Stories Are Called Exclusive When Theyre Not Heres a typical scenario the president offers a one-on-one interview to ABC, CBS, and NBC. Each network will then tout its exclusive interview, even though the president sat down with all three. It becomes a question of semantics whether these interviews are exclusive. CBS may have asked pointed questions about foreign policy that the other networks forgot to do. They may have gotten answers about education and health care instead. In a perfect world, the networks would sit down and each take a topic with the president, then present their interviews together so that viewers could watch one network each night to get different information. In a competitive environment like network news, that will likely never happen. Stories Fail to Live up to the Hype Whether youre watching a local TV affiliate or a broadcast network, the reporting and promotion of news stories usually involve two different departments. A reporter will tell the promotion department the basic facts of the story, while the promotion producers create topical advertisements designed to get people to watch. When the communication between the departments breaks down, the result can easily be a promo that doesnt accurately match the story. Viewers will be lured into watching a newscast to see a blockbuster report, only to be disappointed by the lackluster story they see. Every news outlet has been burned by this problem, but if it happens too often, viewers will become wise to the carnival-barker promotion and ignore it. Producing news quickly and accurately isnt easy. Mistakes happen on the air, online and in print. But media myths concerning bias and ethical lapses are usually just that myths, that arent supported by the facts.
